Working Woman...

In this week's celeb makeover news Rihanna has been seen sporting a new do'. The Barbadian singer has been  known to change it up pretty often. This time she is rocking a blonde wig, or perhaps it is a full sew-in. Either way it looks like she is channeling Tina Turner and Heather Locklear back in the 80s. I think the 80s and 90s are back in style, but she is incorporating too many elements in this one look. She comes across as trashy and dumpster chic...minus the chic.
The shorts are in style again, and can look decent depending on how you wear them. Thigh high "hooker" boots are also all the rage these days. But I think they are a bit classier when paired with black skinny pants/jeans and a nice blouse. It looks a little more sexy and high class that way instead of coming off like a street walker.

And lastly, there's the horrible blonde weave or wig. I love blonde hair on black women, and I think many of of us can pull it off because it contrasts with our skin and "pops" so to speak. However, she chose a horrible wig. It looks a bit ratty and trailer park-ish. I'm guessing this is what she was going for, but it is so unflattering. If I saw her walking down the street, I would definitely think she was a street walker. The look is so cheap and tacky! I feel like she is on her way to one of those 80s rock videos. You know, the ones with the women in daisy dukes and bikini tops dancing on the hood of a red corvette or something lol. Great, now I can't get "Pour Some Sugar on Me" out of my head. Personally, I would like to see Rihanna try wearing braids or dread locs. She could even wear them in red, blonde or some funky color that would suit her! I think that would look really nice on her and accentuate her island side. We haven't seen her island flavor in a while, so braids/locs would be refreshing. Plus, it would be a little different from what most pop stars are wearing right now. Other than Solange, most people are rocking a very cookie-cutter look.

So, what do you think...Is Rihanna's new look hot or a hot mess?

Get it Twisted: Turban Time!

Okay ladies(and gents) I have to confess, I have a new obsession. At the moment  I have an  uncontrollable attraction to turbans. That's right, I have been bitten by the "turban loving" bug. Now that I have yarn braids, I sooooo want to try rocking a turban with them. My only worry is that I will end up looking like I'm tying my hair up for bed instead of looking like a fierce Nubian queen lol. We shall see! I will let you guys know when I try one...and there will be tons of pics. I can't wait to "get it twisted" via a fierce and funky turban.

Anywho, turbans have been creeping into the fashion scene for about a year now. The style has even made it's way onto the runway for major fashion shows and Sarah Jessica Parker (SJP) wore one in the most recent Sex and the City movie. However, I don't think the major fashion shows, SJP, and etc have done the style justice. Please see the horrendous evidence below.

Turbans on the runway!

The turban can be a hit or miss. I think SJP, and many of the "trendy" celebs make the trend look silly and costume-like. In my opinion, it looks best (and effortless) on women who already have a certain amount of  chic in a natural and earthy way (if that makes any sense). It's hard to explain, but you have to have a certain essence in order to pull it off. Otherwise, you will end up looking like you are going to a Halloween party. Either that, or a fortune teller at the local fair! And I don't know anyone who wants to look like they are trying too hard. Fashion should accentuate what we have going on naturally. So if you try a turban, and it looks like you are dressed as a character - the look is probably not for you. Here's another example of a turban gone wrong.

But when the turban is done right, it looks breath taking! For example, Solange Knowles has been rocking them for quite some time now and she is one of my personal favs. She makes it look so effortless!  I love her style in general though, and she might be my favorite fashionista at the moment. She can wear the turban with something dressy and conservative or just throw on a pair of blue jeans and a tank top and still make the head wrap look flawless.

Others who got it right...

What do you say kinky ladies & gents, is the turban trend hot...or not?

The Best Orange Lipstick...Ever!

Orange has been popping up everywhere lately, and it isn't because Halloween is around the corner. That's right, the color usually associated with the fall season has made a major dent in spring and summer fashion this year! The hottest color right now is wearing a bold orange lip! I find the whole orange lipstick trend to be very interesting. Current fashion is heavily influenced by trends from the late 80's and early 90's right now, so I guess it makes sense that the bold look would make a comeback. I remember this color being really trendy when I was a child. It seemed as if all of the women in r&b videos were wearing it...especially women with darker skin tones. I thought it was so beautiful! My mom also wore various shades of orange lipstick back then as well. A few months ago, I decided to give orange lipstick a try. I went to my local Walmart and purchased Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipstick in the color "Siren" 677. It was around $5 to $7 (which isn't bad at all).

It is a true hot/ bold orange color! I love this color! I think it pops against my skin so nicely! Also, it would be great to wear in the fall as well! As far as the texture is concerned, the lipstick is smooth and creamy, so you don't need to wear gloss with it. The only negative thing I can say is that it kept getting on my teeth. However, I think that was more so because I have braces and they tend to stick out and rub against my lips. Otherwise, I like the lipstick. You can build it to your desired level of pigment. So if you are not ready to go realllllly bold just yet, start with one layer of it. It will look a little redish that way. However, if you want a bright/hot orange look...just layer it up! I think this lipstick is definitely a keeper. It won't be an everyday staple of mine, but I will wear it whenever I want to make a statement! Want to see more pictures of me wearing the  "Siren" shade??? Click here to see my video review of the lipstick. It  includes more pictures of me wearing this lipstick! But for now, I will leave you guys with a walk down orange lipstick memory lane. Toodles!
